Adobe xd design how to#
Instructor Dani Beaumont, a principal product manager on the Adobe XD team, shows you how to set up a design project and use the workspace layouts and tools. In this course, part one in the three part series, you’ll learn how to create a variety of screen layouts using native tools within the application, or by importing content from other applications like Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. However, reconnecting those links didn’t take too long, and now that I know how the components work in prototypes on XD, I know what to expect next time.Adobe XD-a UX design platform for creating experiences using an iterative design process-was designed to help make it easier to collaborate on and share your ideas. Some unforeseen issues came with this as well, since I’d also used components for elements like the buttons, and I needed them to go to a variety of pages-not just one like the main menu icons would. In short, I accidentally discovered that feature I thought XD was missing-I no longer needed to manually connect all of the menus to the correct pages in the prototype. However, I noticed that when I began prototyping, my menu icons were automatically linking screens to the targets I selected with the master components. That feature alone is why I made all of my menu icons components. Plus, you can create alternate component states which allow you to quickly change versions of the component (such as one version that is clickable, and one that is not). If you need to edit them, like I did multiple times for Webbed, all you need to do is edit the master component-the group or shape that you first made and saved-instead of editing every copy you placed. If you need to use one, you can just grab it from your list of saved components. The answer was unexpected, and discovered on accident, and incredibly welcome: components.Ĭomponents, for any who may be unaware, are groups or shapes that you’ve saved for re-use. I never found a way to replicate that time-saving feature in XD until this second go-around. InVision, which I had used quite often at Flatiron School, had this great feature of being able to save certain ways a page would interact in the prototype. However, I learned a few important things about prototyping in XD this time around which will certainly change how I approach future projects. I got a chance to prototype within Adobe XD once before this project, so I knew the basics of how transitions and connecting screens worked. What really took these grids to the next level was the one-click scroll button I learned about next. Repeat grids came in handy for Webbed, allowing me to create editable lists in just seconds, once my template design was finished. Once I created two equally sized background shapes-no longer just using the shape behind my list as the white background-the problem was resolved! I had a little trouble figuring out why my spacing wasn’t coming out perfectly like Jesse’s had until I realized it was because I had a grey background for one list item, and no background for the second in the design I was trying to copy. Given that the project I was working on at the time involved a few types of lists and grids, I went to explore the repeat grid function myself.
Around 17:00 he suddenly went from having one list item to about eight, all spaced perfectly apart. I learned about repeat grids during a quick lunch while watching this video from Jesse Showalter. One of the best ways to learn about design is to watch others work. I should note as well that I’m not reviewing XD, but I’m inevitably going to have opinions on my experience. This may be some of use to people just getting started with Adobe XD, or with UX/UI design in general. This isn’t a guide on how to get started, but rather a list of some things that I found helpful, having already known how to use most of the basic functions. It’s missing a few features but you can still create and share excellent work that way.

If you’re looking for a way to get started, I’d recommend downloading the free version. There’s a lot of powerful aspects to XD which I didn’t fully understand until recently. In what appears to be my infrequent effort to provide new UX and UI designers with some guidance and resources based on my own experiences, let’s talk about some tricks I picked up while designing Webbed.
What I didn’t expect was that I’d learn so much about XD in the process. So, I thought I would try it out in an attempt to broaden my capabilities. Although I dabbled in Adobe XD during my time at Flatiron School, I hadn’t used it to create and prototype a project from start to finish until I was asked to assist on what would become Webbed-more on that project at a later date.
